As many as one-fifth of American children and teens suffer from a mental disorder such as anxiety or depression and the incidence of such ailments is rising, a study said.
“A total of 13 percent to 20 percent of children living in the United States experience a mental disorder” according to the report examining the mental health of adolescents released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). The study found that the most prevalent mental ailment was Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD), which was found in 6.8 percent of the nation’s youth, followed by behavioral or conduct problems(3.5%), anxiety(3%), depression(2.1%), autism spectrum disorders(1.1%).
The report showed that boys were more likely than girls to have certain mental health ailments, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety. Adolescent girls, meanwhile, were more likely than boys to have depression or an alcohol use disorder.
The report called on health professionals to conduct “early diagnosis and appropriate treatment” to “better understand the impacts of mental disorders, inform needs for treatment and intervention strategies, and promote the mental health of children.”
미국 어린이와 청소년 다섯 명 중 한 명이 불안장애와 우울증 등 정신질환을 앓고 있으며 발병률이 지속적으로 증가하고 있다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.
미국 질병통제예방센터(CDC)는 청소년 정신질환 보고서에서 “미국 아이들의 13~20%가 정신질환을 경험하고 있다”고 발표했다. 연구 결과 가장 흔히 나타나는 정신질환은 주의력결핍 장애로 미국 아이 중 6.8%가 겪고 있었으며, 행동 장애(2.5%), 불안 장애(3%), 우울증(2.1%), 자폐범주성 장애(1.1%) 순으로 조사됐다.
성별로는 남자 아이가 여자 아이보다 주의력결핍 장애, 자폐범주성 장애, 불안 장애에 시달릴 가능성이 더 컸다. 우울증과 음주 장애는 여자 아이가 겪을 확률이 더 높았다. 보고서는 건강 전문가들에게 “조기 진단과 적절한 치료가 중요하다”며 “정신 질환의 영향을 더 잘 이해하고, 치료에 필요한 정보와 대처 전략을 잘 안내해 아이들의 정신건강을 지켜야 한다”고 강조했다. AFP 일부 발췌
